Makeup 101

Putting makeup on in the morning can help us enhance our natural beauty and give us that boost of confidence to start our day. So for this beauty blog post, I teamed up with Tracey from Lipstick & Muffin to give you ladies a beginners guide to building your makeup bag. Whether you are a frequent traveler, a busy mom on the go or just starting to experiment with makeup like myself, here is a guide you can use!

Tracey’s eyeliner & mascara essentials: Motives Cosmetics Liquid Eyeliner in Noir & Maybelline Volume Express Colossal Pumped (waterproof)

1.Eyeliner. For me, eyeliner is a must have. If you are busy and need a quick makeup routine in the morning that would help open up your eyes, eyeliner will be your best friend. There are many types of eyeliners out there, my favorite one is Motives Cosmetic Liquid Eyeliner in Noir. What I love is the fact that the tip of this eyeliner is very easy to control. It is also very forgiving. If this is your first time using it and make a tiny bit of mistakes, a Q-tip will be your best friend.

Here is Tracey’s before and after shots. She has a step-by-step breakdown of how she does her eyeliner on her version of the blog post. Feel free to click this link: Tracey’s eyeliner guide.

2.Mascara. There are many different types of mascaras out there from an array of brands and price points. For me, mascara that helps keep my eyelashes curled and makes them look voluminous is ideal. My go-to mascara is L’Oreal Paris’s Voluminous Million Lashes mascara in blackest black (#630; waterproof). It’s a mascara that I’ve been using for years and have gone back to it every time despite of trying different brands. It can hold the curls of my otherwise fine eyelashes! *I also use an eyelash curler.

Using Kaye’s go to L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Million Lashes Mascara in Blackest Black, #630 (waterproof)

(Tracey) 1.Primer: I highly recommend everyone to use primer before applying any type of products on your face. Some people underestimate the power of face primer and skip this step but I suggest you not to. Primer not only reduces the size of your pores, makes sure your makeup is applied on a smooth canvas but also protect your skin from free radicals. My favorite one is Motives Complexion Perfecting Face Primer because it also produces a matte finish when I apply my foundation on my skin.

2.Concealer/Foundation/Translucent Powder. If you have flawless skin, lucky you 🙂  I suggest not putting too much products on your skin unless there is something you must cover. For myself, I suffered from acne for almost all my life so it’s very important to me that my acne scars are covered without making me look cakey.

My favorite concealer is Motives Liquid Concealer in Light for Yellow Undertone.

My foundation was actually customized so it matches my exact skin tone and was made to help me with my skin condition. My face started to clear up after 2 weeks using it so this has been my favorite product ever since. Lastly, because I have very oily skin, I like to set my liquid foundation with Motives Translucent Powder in Medium. I love about this powder is because it gives me great coverage without making me look all caked up. It also feels very light and helps maintain my skin’s natural moisture.

(Kaye) 3.Blush. It’s a great way to add some colour and freshness in your face. I tend to gravitate around rose pink and some peach blushes partly because I find that they look more natural on my face and they give me that fresh flushed look

(Tracey & Kaye) Lips:

Tracey’s favorite must-have item: Motives Hydrating Lip Balm. This lip balm always gives her an instant hydration and is packed with vitamin C & E.

1.Lip balm/Tinted Lip balm. Two words = cracked lips. Try to carry at least a lip balm in your purse/bag it will keep your lips soft and supple.

2.Lipstick. For special occasions or a maybe a first date, lipsticks add a nice finishing touch and some colour to your look

This is just a quick list of beauty items to have in stock for your makeup kit to get you started. By all means feel free to add or substitute items you are more comfortable with. Also, please keep in my your skin type and skin undertone when you’re buying makeup. Doing so will help you identify which shades and colours work best for your look and skin.

Thank you Tracey for doing this beauty collab with me! I have so much more makeup tricks to learn from you haha 🙂 Share your thoughts with us by leaving a comment below! 🙂
