What is the plate of your life?

For a twenty something year old, it may be a little sad that I didn’t have any plans this Saturday night. But if I did I wouldn’t have wandered around Netflix looking for something good to watch. I came across a documentary series featuring six of the most renowned culinary rock stars in the world. So simply called the, Chef’s Table, tells the stories of Ben Shewry (Melbourne, Australia), Magnus Nilsson (Järpen, Sweden), Francis Mallmann (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Niki Nakayama (Los Angeles, CA, USA), Dan Barber (New York City, USA) and Massimo Bottura (Modena, Italy).

Throughout the first episode I watched (showcasing Massimo Bottura), I could not help but feel inspired. By all means I’m not an aspiring chef yet I felt the passion that Massimo Bottura has exuding through his words and excitement about food and his cuisine. Food is celebrated as an art form articulating his memories as a child in his grandmother’s kitchen. He saw Italian cuisine in a different perspective.

Learning about the backlash he initially received as a chef (at Osteria Francescana) from multiple critics and using those negativities as motivation to delve deeper into Italian cuisine was risky. Although, I couldn’t help but wonder: why is it that when you’ve put everything you have on the line something undeniably pure (almost magical) comes out of it? Why do we need to risk it all to (potentially) gain a reward?
